Libya`s Great Man-Made River Project

summary

This article was written by John Watkins on Saturday, 18 March 2006. It is about the eighth wonder of the world (Great man-made river project) in Libya. The project was like a big challenge because the nature of the climate is hot and dry. The project was about finding fresh water by transferring the water by the pipes to the coastal cities.

Oil exploration was the point of changing because they can offer money with equipment and materials for this project. The problem was Libya did not have engineering or technical skills so they went to the foreign companies from different countries to help them. Muammar Al-Qadhafi started the project and it was in three phases. In 1993 phase 1 was started, to transfer water from eastern well-fields to Benghazi. In 1996 phase 2, bringing water to Tripoli from western well-fields at Jebel Hassouna was completed. Phase 3, which was about linking the first two phases, was unfinished in 2006.

Many Libyans helped the government in this noble project. It was successful because of hard work and good planning.

The main idea

The main idea is talking about how Libyans were living without fresh water until this project came. But the problem was about how this project will be done without enough materials. After good planning the project was done successfully and now the water is distributed to the coastal cities like Tripoli and Benghazi.

Opinion

In my opinion, I think finding other sources to analyze the sea water is better and cheaper for coastal cities; because some countries will find it very difficult to find fresh water underground.
